Tor routes your traffic through three volunteer-operated relays, encrypting each hop separately, so no single relay knows both your identity and your destination. This is called onion routing.
Tor is slow because of the multi-hop path, but it provides strong anonymity for most threats. Tor exit nodes are public and frequently flagged, so many websites block or rate-limit Tor traffic.
